First Marvel series ‘WandaVision’ heading to Disney+

The entire library of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is already available on Disney+. However, with the launch of the streaming service it opened up a lot of new possibilities for Disney. The Star Wars universe is expanding, with The Mandalorian being a massive success and an Obi-Won series also starting production. The MCU is slated for similar treatment with the first series WandaVision starting to stream on Disney+ on January 21st.

The show will only have six episodes in the first season, as Disney tests the concept and the viability of the show. Original series that pivots off of their massive library of much-loved properties is meant to garner millions of subscribers over the next couple of years, and WandaVision is the first attempt from the MCU to expand this effort that Star Wars has successfully started.

Another MCU series was originally expected before WandaVision. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which focuses on the titular characters from the Captain America films, was planned to be first in-line for release, but due to production issues it was delayed to later in 2021.

The upcoming WandaVision focuses on the relationship between Scarlett Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) after the events of Avengers: Endgame. It will have a very different look and feel to the films, though, with the first episode being filmed in black and white and in front of a live studio audience.

There will be other supporting characters from the MCU in the new show as well. Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings) from the Thor films and Agent Jimmy Woo (Randall Park) from The Ant-Man and the Wasp are said to play important roles.
