Whereas the likes of Samsung and Huawei have been willing to go toe-to-toe with their own foldable smartphones, South Korean giant LG has taken somewhat of a different approach. The LG Wing introduced us to a swivelling smartphone, and in the future, the LG Slide could represent the concept of the ‘rollable phone’.
LG has for years teased its rollable OLED panel designed for use in televisions, and now the company seems to be preparing to take that concept to a mobile form factor. As tipsters following the European Union’s Intellectual Property Office have noted, LG has applied for a trademark name for a rollable phone under the LG Slide and LG Rollable names, giving us little inference as to which brand the smartphone will be marketed under.
Notably, LG has also trademarked other names in the past including, as GSM Arena notes, The Roll, Double Roll, Dual Roll, Bi-Roll, Roll Canvas, Bendi, Flex, Foldi, and Duplex. Go ahead and pick your favourite.
The LG Rollable name was filed on November 2nd, with the LG Slide moniker first filed for on November 4th. Interestingly, the application makes note that the rollable device may include support for a stylus, which could give fresh impetus to the fact that the device could in default form represent a smartphone, and unfurl to represent a tablet.
It remains to be seen when and where the device will see light of day, and when it arrives on the market it will undoubtedly represent one of the most unique smartphones available to buy. Whether LG can make that concept stick, however, is anyone’s guess.
