TymeBank, the fast-growing South African digital bank, is gearing up for an initial public offering (IPO) and eyeing a potential listing on the New York Stock Exchange by 2028. The bank, backed by Chinese giant Tencent Holdings, is currently raising US$150 million to fuel its expansion plans.

TymeBank’s success story is fuelled by its focus on the underbanked population. Launched in 2019, the bank has quickly captured 10% of the primary bank market share in South Africa, becoming the third-largest lender by customer base. This achievement comes despite facing competition from established players like Standard Bank and First National Bank.
Following a similar strategy to Brazil’s Nu Holdings (also backed by Tencent), TymeBank offers a convenient and affordable digital banking experience. With its focus on mobile app and website access, coupled with a network of physical kiosks, TymeBank provides an inclusive banking solution. The bank has achieved profitability in its South African operations and is now setting its sights on Asia.
TymeBank’s CEO, Coenraad Jonker, has ambitious plans for Asian expansion. The bank already has a presence in the Philippines and Vietnam, with Jonker aiming for profitability in the Philippines within 18 months and a full retail banking offering in Vietnam by next year.
This fundraising round positions TymeBank for an exciting future, potentially becoming a major player in both African and Asian digital banking markets.
