Sony has launched a PlayStation loyalty programme that rewards you for buying, and more importantly, playing games on its platform. Called PlayStation Stars, is debuts in the Americas on October 5th, following in Europe and Australasia on October 13th. It is already active is most Asian markets, starting in Japan. It comes at no additional cost to PlayStation owners, and PlayStation Plus members receive some additional benefits.

In order to get the “full” experience of PlayStation Stars, it currently needs to be accessed through the PlayStation App on mobile devices, according to Sony. You can sign-up in the app or online, and soon you’ll be able to sign-up in through your console as well.
So, how do you earn rewards? You need to complete activities and campaigns ranging from the very basic (playing any game once a month) to the challenging (being one of the first to score a game’s platinum trophy in your region). You’ll earn loyalty points you can put toward your PlayStation Network wallet, digital collectibles and certain products. You can also receive collectibles directly.
There are additional ways of increasing your rewards, with other in-game events. You can advance through trophy- and purchase-based status levels. However, you’ll have to top that up 13 months after the end of the calendar year when you reached them. If you reach level 2 this October, you’ll have until January 31st, 2024 to do something extending that status. As with any loyalty programme, the intention is very clear. It improves ‘stickyness’, i.e. keeping people on the platform, increases spend, and makes customers more invested in the product. However, an additional motivation in this case is to make sure customers are truly enjoying the platform, by introducing them to games, modes or challenges they wouldn’t otherwise have seen
