Sony launches new DualSense Edge pro controller for PS5

After years of fan requests, Sony have officially announced the new DualSense Edge wireless controller, aimed at players that spend many, many hours with their controller. The “high performance” controller is fully customizable, much like the Xbox Elite controller. It includes the ability to remove and replace removable analogue thumbsticks, new rear buttons, changeable stick caps, and multiple control profiles.

There are three types of stick caps users can change out on the controller, namely standard, high dome, and low dome. The DualSense Edge also has two swappable back buttons (half-dome or lever) that can be mapped to any other buttons, much like typical paddles. Users can also replace the stick modules, which is something the Xbox Elite cannot do. Of course, all these additional parts will be sold separately.

At the rear there are adjustable trigger hair locks, which are ideal for players who want to physically lock their triggers to half-pull and adjust the travel distance. This will make the adaptive trigger less impactful, but for certain types of games some gamers may prefer the quick travel rather than adaptive feel. Users can also remap or deactivate button inputs and tweak stick sensitivity and dead zones.

Unlike its major competition, the DualSense Edge will allow all profiles and customisable settings to be managed through the PlayStation 5’s interface, rather than a purpose-built app. Users can easily save multiple control profiles and quickly swap between them in the settings, which is extremely helpful if you switch between games regularly. Sony has even added an on-controller interface with a dedicated function button that lets you quickly switch between profiles, adjust volume and chat balance, and access profile settings to tweak the controller during a game.

Sony hasn’t revealed pricing or the launch date, but it will likely cost about the same as the Xbox Elite, i.e. around the $200 mark.

“In the months ahead, we look forward to sharing more details about the DualSense Edge wireless controller, including launch timing, and can’t wait to see how the PS5 community unlocks the full potential of the controller’s customization options,” said Hideaki Nishino, senior vice president of PlayStation platform experience.
