The design language of iPhones don’t change very often. The current design with the notch first came about with the iPhone X back in 2017 and has remained pretty much the same since. The notch was made slightly smaller last year in the iPhone 13, but it still remains an eyesore for people not used it. The iPhone 14 Pro models will see a change in design by ditching the notch and placing the Face ID sensors underneath the display.

The first leaks and rumours about the notch disappearing on the 2022 model of the iPhone first surfaced right before the launch of last year’s iPhone 13 range, and hasn’t stopped since. It makes a lot of sense to make this change, as the Face ID sensors aren’t affected by visible light, as is created by the screen. The selfie camera will then use a hole-punch display, eliminating the need for the notch altogether.
Apple opted not to include an under-display selfie cam, as is now found on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3. While it works fine, the technology still can’t deliver the same selfie performance on hole-punch displays. This is due to the light being captured still having to pass through the display, and can lead to weak and inaccurate colours and a strange haziness. Face ID’s IR-based setup isn’t affected like the camera is, as it doesn’t capture visible light that is distorted by the display.
It appears that there will be a difference between the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro models this year, with the former still retaining a notch (perhaps smaller) while the Pro models will ditch it.
Unfortunately, for some, we won’t see the return of Touch ID this year. Apple is working on including an under-display fingerprint scanner, but this won’t happen until 2023.
