Samsung’s latest foldables are taking the form factor mainstream

In a look back at its journey to making foldable smartphones, Samsung has announced that its latest foldables are extremely popular and the Galaxy Z Flip 3 has enticed more people to jump brands than its flagship devices. According to Samsung, it has sold four times as many foldables in 2021 compared to the year prior.

With the latest versions of their flagship devices, it took less than a month for both the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and the Galaxy Z Fold 3 to outsell their predecessors. It is extremely proud of the performance of the Galaxy Z Flip 3, which has seen the most customers introduced to the foldable form factor. The main reason it was so successful, at least in our opinion, is that it was the first foldable to make the form factor as affordable as other foldable smartphones – it launched at $999, which is the same as some of its more conventional flagship devices.

Samsung has improved its foldables very quickly, more so than we usually see with a new form factor in the smartphone industry. The biggest win in 2021 was, again, the Galaxy Z Flip 3, which came down in price and improved the biggest negatives from the previous version – it now has a useable small outer display and the camera performance has been improved significantly.

Samsung said it expects foldables to grow tenfold by 2023, and it’s heavily investing in research and development to be able to keep up with rival devices that will surely pop up. One of those competitors is Huawei’s P50 Pocket phone, which is the company’s first model that folds vertically like the Galaxy Z Flip.
