The second trailer of the much anticipated The Batman movie has finally been revealed and boy was it worth the wait. Unveiled at DC Comic’s biggest showcase event, Fandome – in a conversation involving the key individuals spearheading the movie, namely Matt Reeves (the director), Zoe Kravitz (set to assume the role of Catwoman) and of course the man himself, Robert Pattison (Bruce Wayne aka The Batman) – this trailer was the star of the show and DC played it expertly by making all of us wait until the very end of the event to show it off.
By far my favourite superhero of all time, Batman is an iconic and key character in the DCU and ever since the announcement of another rendition of the movie in the making, a lot has been riding on it with the spotlight firmly on Matt Reeves. As widely known, Reeves took over from Ben Affleck in 2017, who was, at the time, set to direct and continue in his new role as the dark knight. When the news of the change broke, attention immediately turned towards who would potentially assume the role with Reeves confirming Robert Pattinson as the chosen one in 2019.
As expected, a massive backlash ensued with most individuals voicing their disappointment and disapproval (myself included). Like many, memories of The Twlight saga (did somebody say cringe-worthy?) with Pattison’s (not so great) vampire character immediately came flooding in. Little did we know that Reeves was onto something, this became apparent in the first teaser trailer released last year at Comic Con where we got our first glimpse of Pattinson’s rendition of the character which was beyond spectacular and shut everyone up (myself included).
The explosive new trailer gives off Chris Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy vibes, which to this day, continues to receive critical acclaim and is easily one of the best to have ever been made in the comic book universe. Another standout feature of the trailer is the fantastic cinematography that has beautiful elements, shots as well as exquisite uses of colour all executed to showcase the mood of each scene.
Perfectly summing up what we see in the trailer is Gizmodo:
“Contrasting all the anger Bruce gets to unleash, we’ve got some moments of intimacy between him and Selina as she attempts to probe what kind of man sits behind the Batman’s angry mask. Additionally, we get proper good glimpses of Paul Dano as the Riddler (and his penchant for question marks in the silliest of places), Andy Serkis as Alfred, and even a few more good looks at Jeffrey Wright’s Commissioner Gordon, too. But for all our glimpses, above all the focus here is on that aforementioned explosive anger, as Bruce turns his new persona as the Dark Knight into a petrifying unstoppable force—whether it’s a spray of bullets (or six) or attempts to turn his new ride into scrap. Nothing, it seems, is going to stop this Batman… other than perhaps his own fury.“
Matt Reeves’ version is mysterious and very intense depicting what could very well be the darkest version yet. It looks like a classic DC movie and is quickly becoming the biggest anticipated DC event since The Snyder Cut. March 4, 2022 can’t come any sooner!
