Zack Snyder’s Army of the dead is upon us

Generally I don’t get the hype behind Zombie movies or series, but having said that there is just something different about Army of the dead. Is it because I’m becoming an avid Zack Snyder fanboy? Or is it because the movie trailer, released yesterday, is that good? Honestly, it’s a bit of both.

Hitting a Netflix screen near you on May 21, Army of the dead is set to be Zack Snyder’s next movie, which considering the story behind the man lately (no guesses why), is more anticipated than anything else in recent memory, at least that’s what I’m seeing judging from all the talk online currently. In case you haven’t seen it, here it is…

Starring Dave Bautista, Omari Hardwick, Tig Notaro to mention a few, the trailer opens with Scott Ward (Bautista), a former zombie war hero, working at a small-town diner before he’s hired to pull off a massive heist. Under the Las Vegas strip, there’s a vault with $200 million in cash. And that’s what the movie hinges on, that is until, it gets weird and there’s zombies thrown into the mix! Ward is forced to put together a crack team of thieves, badasses, and zombie-fighting veterans to pull off what is seemingly an impossible job.

Upon watching the trailer, I couldn’t stop thinking about how certain elements are similar to… dare I say it… DC Comic’s upcoming movie, The Suicide Squad, can you also see it? Or is it just me in this lane? Either way, you can’t deny how good the movie looks. It’s essentially Snyder’s first full project post-Justice League and there’s no doubt in my mind that deep down inside he wants to prove a point with it. And unlike DC, who are still adamant about not restoring the ‘Snyderverse’ (which I’m still disappointed and haven’t recovered fully from yet), Netflix has his back.

Such is the style of film making that Snyder subscribes to that it would be hard for Army of the dead to be anything but good. Having said that though, the margin for error is very small, just ask Joss Whedon who after the Justice League saga hasn’t been quite the same since. Add to the fact that Snyder divides a lot of opinion and his other DC projects (Man of Steel and BvS: Dawn of Justice) not quite hitting the spot, then the conversation around his latest work unravels further and becomes even more interesting. I for one am here for all of it, sign me up.
