Apple announces WWDC 2021 date, another virtual event

Apple has officially confirmed the scheduled date for its Worldwide Developer Conference for 2021, and that it will once again be a virtual-only event. WWDC 2021 will take place on June 7th, so the company decided the world isn’t ready for an in-person event yet.

While WWDC may not be Apple’s most flashy event, or most exciting, it gives us a yearly view of what the company is doing with the software that accompanies its highly sought after products. The presentations at the conference is dedicated to showing off the latest versions of its various operating systems, i.e. iOS, iPadOS, MacOS, tvOS, and watchOS.

As is the always the case with Apple events, there might be room for a “one more thing” moment. In years past they have used WWDC to unveil the latest versions of its Macbooks and Mac Pro, and last year they used the slot to announce their own silicon that has now replaced Intel processors in their laptops.

We haven’t seen any concrete evidence that Apple will be announcing new hardware at the event this year, although there are some rumours about the new iMac making its debut at WWDC 2021. Some also believe we may see Apple AR mixed-reality headset, but recent reports indicate it will have its own event when in-person launches is possible again, since hands-on time is needed to truly experience it.

The new iMac will look similar to the absurd Apple Pro Display XDR and will also run on Apple’s own chipset architecture.

It is a pretty early announcement from Apple, so expect more rumours than usual to be flying around. As always, take all of them with a pinch of salt until we see what Apple has to offer at the event on June 7th.
