This is BMW’s futuristic electric scooter

The Motorrad Definition CE 04 scooter is a bold step in BWM’s electric mobility ambitions. It aims to “redefine the scooter segment” and changing the way many commute in towns and cities. It is still a concept, so we don’t have much in the form of specs or performance figures as of yet.

The most notable aspect of the new CE 04 is the outlandish design. It has a significantly longer wheelbase than is the norm for this type of vehicle, lending to its low and sleek profile. It uses harsh lines in the side panels to make it stand apart. This is in part to house the battery pack.

The battery lies flat in the underbody, creating more space for storage. There is a storage compartment hidden away below the seat that is large enough for a full-sized motorcycle helmet.

“A scooter is not a ‘fun bike’ which is taken for ride in the mountains in fine weather, but a practical everyday vehicle for driving from home to the office or meeting friends in the evening – simply a vehicle for every day in the city,” says Alexander Buckan, who heads BMW’s Motorrad division, in a statement.

This new Motorrad Definition CE 04 model is a drastic evolution from its standing C Evolution electric motor scooter, which first saw the light of day in 2014. The current model has seen several iterative improvements over the years, boasting more than 150km or range now and able to travel at 120 km/h. It is still expensive, but BWM hopes to bring the cost down as take-up increases.

There is a lot of competition in this market now. Traditional car manufacturers all over the world are exploring smaller electric vehicles (even electric bicycles), as the technology has now progressed far enough so that these vehicles are a viable form of transport.
