EA closes BioWare and cancels new Mass Effect game, unreleased trailer leaks

Electronic Arts (EA) has announced the permanent closure of historic role-playing developer BioWare alongside a wave of corporate restructuring resulting in approximately 400 job cuts across the company. The shutdown officially terminates development on the upcoming Mass Effect project, reportedly titled Mass Effect Universe, just hours before an internal promotional trailer leaked online.

The closure of BioWare affects roughly 50 developers based at the studio’s Edmonton headquarters, while broader workforce reductions impact multiple EA-owned entities, including Respawn, Maxis, and Full Circle. The cuts follow EA’s transition into private ownership via a $55 billion leveraged buyout backed by international investors.

Industry analysts note that debt obligations stemming from the buyout have triggered extensive cost-cutting measures across publisher operations. The closure marks the end of an era for BioWare, which shaped modern computer role-playing games through landmark franchises such as Baldur’s Gate, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age, and the Mass Effect trilogy.

Shortly after the closure announcement, a promotional trailer for the cancelled project surfaced online. Industry reporters later confirmed the footage to be authentic material prepared by the studio before operations were abruptly halted.

The leaked footage showcased a blend of in-engine sequences, over-the-shoulder action mechanics, and familiar franchise elements. Set roughly 600 years after the original trilogy, the game would have shifted focus toward spy-thriller elements and hitman-style agent missions. The trailer concluded with the official title Mass Effect Universe alongside a “coming soon” slate, offering fans a bittersweet glimpse into a project that will now never see commercial release.
