Even before Microsoft unveiled the Xbox Series X, rumours were floating around that there is a second version of the new generation console launching, possibly one without a disc drive (as is the case with the Sony PlayStation 5 Digital Edition). That device is set to be the Xbox Series S, according to leaked hardware documentation and controller packaging. The packaging indicates that the controller is designed for the “Xbox Series X|S.”

While we don’t have an exact price or launch date for the Xbox Series X, we now have confirmation from sources that it will launch alongside the Xbox Series S. If the new generation consoles follow the naming conventions we saw in the current generation from Microsoft – i.e. the Xbox One X and Xbox One S – we can assume that the Series S will be a more affordable, lower spec console, probably with no disc drive.
A previous leak revealed that the second console to launch alongside the Series X will be aiming to deliver gaming at 1080p and 1440p, and not full 4K (a major selling point of the new generation). According to this leak, it would have 7.5GB of RAM rather than the 13.5GB found on the Series X, with an underclocked CPU and a lower performance GPU. According to other reports, the Series S could even be part of an Xbox All Access subscription plan that reportedly bundles the console and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate for a monthly fee.
We are expecting more details regarding both the Xbox Series X and this Xbox Series S during the course of this month. Microsoft will hopefully reveal the price as well at that point, but it is more likely to just get details regarding specs.
