Amazon is creating a Fallout series with the ‘Westworld’ team

Fallout has been a staple of the gaming industry for more than two decades now. It mostly deals with issues around nuclear war and what the world would look like afterwards. It has an impressive library of interesting and engaging stories, and Amazon Prime Video wants to use the foundations the game developers have built.

The latest sci-fi series from Amazon will be based on the post-apocalyptic Fallout series. They are partnering with the developer of the series, Bethesda, to create an equally engaging world in a TV series. They are certainly throwing a lot of resources at the production – it has been confirmed that the creators of the hugely successful ‘Westworld’ series will be in charge of the project. Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy are developing the show through their Kilter Films production company.

According to Amazon, they have been looking for ways to create a great Fallout series or movie for the last ten years, but none of the ideas they’ve flirted with in the past felt right. That is, until they saw Nolan and Joy’s vision for the series. As you would imagine, no details of the upcoming series have been shared in either Amazon or Bethesda’s press releases.

Bethesda did want to make it clear that series would retain the games’ “serious and harsh” tone and themes, while utilising some “ironic humor” and oddball “B-movie nuclear fantasies.” That can be a difficult balance to achieve, but with Nolan and Joy’s writing prowess and experience in important social commentary in a blockbuster sci-fi series, we are quietly optimistic.

It is truly encouraging to see major studios turn our beloved games into series and movies, with the trend increasing in frequency in recent years. Sure, there are few good (or even passable) examples, but the mainsteam industry has been improving greatly. This is mostly thanks to involving the developers of the games more than ever before, and listening to what fans want.
