Apple announces its 'Best of the App Store in 2016', Prisma takes top honours

Apple has published its annual collection of its favourite iOS apps in its ‘Best of 2016’ catalogue, in which Prisma and Clash Royale have taken top honours.

Every year Apple gives pause and considers its favourite additions to the iOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS App Store in its ‘Best Of’ catalogue, and 2016 is no different.
2016 has been an intrepid year for apps; augmented reality and VR titles have come and gone – not ignoring, of course, the smash hit Pokemon Go – while other apps such as WhatsApp have introduced a bevvy of updates, swiftly bringing new features to millions of users.

iPhone

Apple has decided to throne Prisma – the app which adds filters to images to emulate the style of several famous artworks and art styles – as its favourite iPhone app of the year. Clash Royale, the spin-off title that stems from Clash of Clans, takes the title of best iPhone game of the year.

iPad

Perhaps an unsurprising choice considering Apple’s iPad Pro push this year, Sketchbook Motion takes the title of iPad app of the year, while Severed is the company’s favourite iPad game.

Apple TV

While Twitter is fraught with immense growing pains, the service gets a one-up from Apple this year, having been named as the Apple TV app of the year. Riptide GP: Renegade is further named the Apple TV game of the year.

Apple Watch

Apple’s watchOS ecosystem has matured from watchOS 2 to watchOS 3, and now benefits from a host of new improvements such as the fact that app logic is now – mercifully – stored on the wearable itself. Perhaps in line with the Apple Watch Series 2’s fitness push, MySwimPro takes the title of Apple Watch app of the year, while Field Day is titled the Apple Watch game of the year.

Mac

Apple’s Mac line has benefitted from a new Pro laptop, Siri integration as well as an OS name-change, and Bear takes the title of Mac app of the year. Life is Strange is further listed as the best Mac game of the year.
