The team behind Pokemon Go have revealed that custom Pokestops and new Pokemon could soon be headed to the game that’s taking the world by storm.
Pokemon Go might have taken over the world, but the game is bereft of its first major update. In a panel discussion at Comic-Con, Niantic Labs founder John Hanke led a panel to discuss new features heading to the game; among them, custom Pokestops and new Pokemon.
Hanke revealed that new Pokemon could soon make their way into the game to accompany the original 150 Pokemon found in the title’s initial release. “Beyond first generation [the original 150], there are some others that may make their way into our universe. We’re looking forward to finding interesting ways to make that happen in the coming months and years”, Hanke stated.

The CEO further clarified that Niantic Labs are looking to add new features around in-game trade and training features; players could soon be able to swap Pokemon with friends, find new ways to train their favourites, and even breed Pokemon in-game.
Hanke offered that Niantic Labs are actively looking into methods to develop Pokestops. While players can presently customize Pokestops by adding a lure model to attract Pokemon, Hanke offered that players may be greeted with more options in future.
Hanke cited the idea that different modules could be used to configure modules in various ways; speaking on the concept of an in-game healing center module which could be attached to a Pokestop to give the location a unique purpose, Hanke quipped that “it’s a pretty cool idea – that you can acquire an object that changes the function of a pokéstop and give it a new ability.”
Pokemon Go is still rolling out worldwide, though we have a short tutorial on how to download the game on iOS and Android in South Africa.
