In news that iPhone fanboys weren’t expecting – and, possibly, Sony fanboys as well – the Xperia Z5 has officially beat out the iPhone 6s in DXO Mark’s stringent photography tests.
DXO Mark, a specialist firm engaging in image quality testing, ranks devices based on examinations of a camera’s exposure, contrast, autofocus, texture, noise, artefacts, and flash, and assigns a rating out of 100.
The iPhone 6S, which was punted by Apple for including a number of new features to capture better images – the addition of a new 12 megapixel sensor on the primary camera chief among them – was assigned an 82/100 rating.
While 82 is certainly an excellent score, the newest iPhone lagged behind other Android competitors. Notably, Google’s Nexus 6P scored 84, while the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge racked up an impressive 87. Sony, however, took top prize with a score of 87.
Sony’s Z5 carries a 25 megapixel sensor, and brings “hybrid autofocus” technology, which enables the Z5’s camera to focus in just under 0.03 seconds.
Interestingly enough, the latest results paint a picture that proves – at least, on paper – Android smartphones have stepped firmly into the digital photography realm. While many Android smartphones might not come close to the brand following Apple has established – around iPhoneography in particular – contenders such as the LG G4 are certainly looking to break this trend.
