Sony launches the Xperia 1 VIII with bigger camera sensors and a redesign

The centrepiece of the Xperia 1 VIII is the new AI Camera Assistant, powered by Xperia Intelligence. Unlike standard auto-modes, this assistant functions as a real-time consultant. By analyzing the subject, lighting, and even local weather conditions, the system suggests the optimal color tones, lens choice, and bokeh intensity. Users receive these settings as interactive suggestions, which can be applied instantly with a single tap.

Sony has also significantly overhauled its camera hardware, most notably within the telephoto module. The phone features a 1/1.56‑inch image sensor, which Sony claims is roughly four times larger than its predecessor. This massive increase in surface area enables superior low-light performance, further enhanced by RAW multi-frame processing, HDR, and advanced noise reduction. Visually, the traditional vertical camera island has been replaced by a sleek square arrangement on the rear, while a 12-megapixel front camera handles selfies.

Beyond its imaging capabilities, the Xperia 1 VIII offers a rare feature for a 2026 flagship: a 3.5mm audio jack. This decision caters directly to audiophiles who prefer high-fidelity wired headphones. Under the hood, the device is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset and features a vibrant 6.5-inch OLED display. It is available in four premium finishes: Graphite Black, Iolite Silver, Garnet Red, and Native Gold.

The device is currently exclusive to the European market, with no confirmed plans for a U.S. release. Pricing starts at 1,499 euros (£1,399) for the 12GB RAM and 256GB storage configuration, climbing to 1,999 euros (£1,849) for the 16GB RAM and 1TB storage model. Pre-orders open today for a June delivery, and as a significant incentive, early buyers will receive a free pair of Sony WH-1000XM6 noise-cancelling headphones.
