Samsung might be one of the largest smartphone manufacturers in the world, but even they have difficulty gaining market share in some countries. Among these, the most important market where Samsung is lagging is Japan. Samsung only has 5.6% market share in Japan compared to the 51.5% Apple owns. The company is willing to do anything to gain more market share, even dropping its Galaxy S6 in Japan.
Samsung has just announced that it will be ditching its own brand (name) for the launch of the Galaxy S6 later this month. The company has decided to follow an old trend that they used years ago in the US, where you‘ll only be able to find them as the “œDocomo Galaxy S6“ or the “œau Galaxy S6,“. The naming will also extend to the Galaxy S6 Edge.
The move goes as far as to renaming Samsung‘s wireless charger as the “œGalaxy“ charger, and the same even goes for the company‘s Facebook page, which is now known as “œGalaxy Mobile Japan.“ Clearly Samsung is going for the stealthy “We are not Samsung” route in able to gain market share in Japan.
Samsung‘s official statement claims: “œWe think the Galaxy brand has been well established in Japan.“ Sadly market share numbers don‘t reveal that, but you‘ll never see a company claim otherwise on a press release. Both the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge are set to launch on April 23rd and we will have to see whether this new angle of attack will swing market share numbers their way.
