Apple unveils the iPhone Duo, entering the foldable market

Apple has officially introduced the iPhone Duo, entering the foldable smartphone market with a dual-screen device that expands the traditional mobile form factor. Designed with the compact footprint of a passport when closed, the handset opens to reveal the largest display ever featured on an iPhone. To deliver a seamless folding mechanism, Apple engineered a custom-torque hinge containing over 100 precision components, allowing the device to shut securely and lay completely flat when opened. A titanium frame provides structural strength while keeping overall weight down. As users transition between folded and unfolded states, interface elements adjust smoothly across screens, maintaining consistent control placements for intuitive daily operation.

The iPhone Duo features a 5.4-inch outer screen and a flexible 7.6-inch interior panel. The internal display supports portrait and landscape orientations, unlocking Split View multitasking that enables users to run two distinct apps side by side or operate multiple instances of a single app, such as Safari. Crucially, both displays support Apple Pencil input for sketching and note-taking. The outer panel also introduces an un-tethered Standby mode, displaying clocks and ambient information without needing active charging. Biometric authentication is managed via a Touch ID sensor integrated into the side power button, alongside unlocking support via a paired Apple Watch.

Under the hood, the iPhone Duo is powered by Apple’s new A20 Pro processor and proprietary C2 cellular modem, ensuring high-performance computing and efficiency. Power distribution is managed by a split dual-battery architecture located across both halves of the chassis. Apple rates the system for up to 31 hours of continuous video playback on the interior display, and up to 44 hours when using only the outer screen. Under balanced daily usage involving both displays equally, the battery setup provides up to 24 hours of operation.

The exterior camera platform features a 48-megapixel Dual Fusion array, pairing a 48-megapixel main sensor, with 12-megapixel 2x optical telephoto capabilities, and a 48-megapixel ultra-wide lens. The system captures high-resolution 24-megapixel and 48-megapixel stills, 4K video at 120 frames per second, and 4K time-lapse footage in Dolby Vision HDR. Front-facing imagery is handled by a 12-megapixel Centre Stage camera on the cover, while an under-display 1080p FaceTime camera rests beneath the interior screen, remaining hidden until engaged.

Software tools take full advantage of the dual-screen configuration. Smart Take optimizes group shots by verifying poses before capturing, while Duo Preview displays a live viewfinder on the outer screen so subjects can adjust their posture. Kid Cue plays animations on the cover screen to direct children’s attention toward the lens, and Duo FaceTime allows nearby companions to participate in video calls using the outer display. Offered in Night Sky and Star White, preorders for the iPhone Duo open October 16, with commercial availability across 70 countries starting October 23.
