ExpenZa, a smartphone app aimed at helping people make smarter decisions about their finances, was recently launched at Mobile Web Africa 2011 by Apposition Consulting. The app automates expense tracking by intercepting the expenditure SMS message sent by various banks in South Africa and uses the information contained in that SMS to automatically populate a user’s expense list.
ExpenZa can be used without a bank’s SMS service by manually adding expenses, for example, keeping track of the cash in your wallet. The app allows the user to create a monthly budget with different expense categories with a specific budget amount for each category. The total spent for each category is made available to the user and therefore provides a continuous overview of spending throughout the month. This helps users to make the necessary adjustments to stick to their budget.
The following South African banks are accommodated for automated expense tracking via SMS: ABSA, Capitec Bank, Discovery Card, First National Bank (FNB), Investec Bank, Standard Bank. More banks and additional features will soon be added to the current list including additional banks in other African countries.
ExpenZa is currently available as a free download on the Android market with a app for BlackBerry to follow shortly.
