Groupe Canal+ is gearing up to introduce its flagship streaming application across MultiChoice territories, including South Africa, following the recent registration of local digital infrastructure. Recent network visibility of a regional landing page indicates that the rollout is imminent, bringing a unified over-the-top (OTT) service designed to integrate third-party platforms like Netflix directly into the interface, mirroring the company’s operational model in Canal+ Afrique regions.

The impending launch follows Canal+ CEO Maxime Saada’s confirmation that the group plans to deploy its proprietary streaming infrastructure across former MultiChoice territories to succeed Showmax, which officially ceased operations on 30 April 2026. Saada previously criticized Showmax’s historical financial performance, labelling it severely loss-making, and emphasized that the company’s strategic priority is transitioning viewers to an integrated DTH and OTT ecosystem. Unlike US operators experiencing sharp satellite declines, Canal+ has maintained stable subscriber retention by coupling direct-to-home feeds with digital access.
The transition has faced minor operational hurdles. When Showmax shut down, displaced subscribers were offered a promotional R99-per-month rate for a 12-month DStv Stream subscription, a 75% discount off the standard R399 pricing. However, in October 2026, several former Showmax customers reported unexpected billing errors, with charges reflecting full rates or inflated amounts exceeding R1,000.
In response to consumer complaints, MultiChoice acknowledged that some users encountered technical discrepancies during its broader package restructuring, confirming that the issues have since been resolved. Eligible customers on the promotional tier have been transitioned to the newly remodelled DStv Sports package at the agreed R99 rate.
MultiChoice’s product overhaul repositioned DStv Compact into a dedicated sports tier. The package retains core programming while expanding access to premium international cricket and SuperSport KickOff, which broadcasts weekly Premier League fixtures alongside supplementary football content.
With Canal+ regional web domains now active and testing underway, the introduction of the unified app is expected to reshape the local streaming landscape. By blending linear satellite broadcasting with advanced OTT integration, the service aims to capture South African consumers seeking consolidated entertainment and sports packages in a shifting media market.
