Google unveils Fitbit Edge with Gemini-powered coaching

Google has officially introduced the Fitbit Edge, a dedicated health and fitness tracker designed to bridge the gap between minimalist band wearables and full-featured smartwatches like the Pixel Watch. Positioned above the entry-level Fitbit Air, the Edge retains a slim form factor with an updated OLED display while incorporating advanced health-monitoring hardware and AI-driven insights.

A core feature of the Fitbit Edge is its integration with Google Health Coach, a Gemini-powered service accessible via a Google Health Premium subscription. By synthesizing user fitness data, sleep metrics, and personal schedules, the platform generates adaptive weekly routines and real-time workout prompts across more than 50 tracked exercise modes. Google claims a 40 percent improvement in built-in GPS tracking accuracy compared to previous generations.

The device also debuts Google’s Health Guardian system, which monitors long-term shifts in physiological indicators such as blood pressure trends and insulin resistance. Continuous heart rate tracking and an onboard ECG app provide automated alerts for irregular heart rhythms or extreme pulse spikes. For sleep tracking, sensor upgrades deliver a 15 percent improvement in sleep stage detection accuracy.

User-interface options include customizable clock faces and complications, allowing users to prioritize metrics such as step counts, sleep scores, or local weather forecasts.

The Fitbit Edge is housed in an IP68-rated enclosure and introduces a user-replaceable battery designed to extend overall device longevity. Powered by a 65mAh cell, the tracker delivers up to seven days of operational battery life from a 90-minute full charge, while a five-minute fast charge provides a full day of usage.

The device is available for pre-order at $179.99 (approx. R3,150) and is scheduled for retail release on 27 October in Obsidian, Fog, Olive, and Canyon colourways. A specialized Stephen Curry Edition featuring a moisture-wicking band and custom basketball clock face is priced at $219.99 (approx. R3,850). Google is including a three-month Google Health Premium trial with all purchases. Official South African availability and local ZAR pricing from authorized retail partners have yet to be confirmed.
