Microsoft has updated its compact PC portfolio with refreshed iterations of the 12-inch Surface Pro and 13-inch Surface Laptop. Both devices transition to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X2 Plus processor, offering a targeted performance upgrade for the company’s smallest portable form factors. While both entry-level lines originally launched below the $1,000 threshold, industry-wide memory and component cost increases have pushed starting prices higher: the Surface Pro 12 now begins at $1,150, while the Surface Laptop 13 starts at $1,199.

Physical form factors remain identical to previous generations. The Surface Pro 12 maintains a 12-inch tablet chassis with an integrated kickstand, requiring the detachable $150 Surface Pro Keyboard for traditional clamshell functionality. The Surface Laptop 13 retains its standard notebook housing, weighing 2.7 pounds. Both devices feature updated 500-nit display panels, representing a 25 percent increase in peak brightness over last year’s models.
The integration of the Snapdragon X2 Plus addresses performance constraints present in earlier Qualcomm-powered entry-level Surface hardware. According to Microsoft, the updated silicon architecture delivers:
- Graphics and Compute: A 60 percent improvement in graphics performance alongside an 18 percent speed increase in standard Microsoft Office productivity workloads.
- AI and Efficiency: A 95 percent acceleration in on-device AI processing and an 18 percent gain in battery efficiency.
For workloads requiring higher thermal and compute headroom, Microsoft continues to offer larger 13-inch Surface Pro and 13.8-inch Surface Laptop configurations equipped with higher-tier Snapdragon X2 processors.
Coinciding with the hardware refresh, Microsoft is releasing Ink Canvas, an AI-assisted, pen-first application designed for the Surface Slim Pen. The software supports digital sketching, document annotation, image generation, and text summarization directly on a digital workspace. Ink Canvas will be available on the Microsoft Store on October 13 for broader Surface hardware compatibility.
Microsoft also introduced an $80 ambidextrous Surface Mouse featuring integrated haptic feedback. The peripheral delivers tactile cues corresponding to specific Windows 11 UI interactions, such as snapping application windows or aligning layout objects. The updated Surface PCs, Ink Canvas software, and haptic accessories will all be available starting October 13.
