Shoprite acquires 51% stake in fintech R&A Cellular to target informal economy

South African retail giant Shoprite Group has completed the acquisition of a 51% controlling stake in fintech service provider R&A Cellular, marking the retailer’s strategic entry into the country’s high-growth informal economy. Revealed alongside other strategic acquisitions in its financial results for the 52 weeks ended 28 June 2026, the transaction officially closed on 14 August 2026. Because the deal was finalized after the financial year-end, purchase price terms were not quantified in the published report.

R&A Cellular operates a point-of-sale (POS) device network that enables informal merchants and spaza shops to offer high-frequency prepaid transactions, including airtime, electricity vouchers, and digital entertainment products within their communities. The partnership grants Shoprite direct access to South Africa’s vibrant township economy, estimated by informal market expert GG Alcock to be worth between R750 billion and R1 trillion. Standard Bank’s Business and Commercial Banking division similarly valued the local market at around R900 billion in its inaugural 2025 Township Informal Economy Report.

Shoprite CEO Pieter Engelbrecht described the acquisition, alongside a separate agreement to acquire 100% of coffee company Vida e Caffè, as relatively small but highly strategic, emphasizing the group’s core focus on securing specialist expertise, capacity, and speed-to-market. The transaction advances Shoprite’s broader fintech expansion strategy, complementing its existing portfolio of digital transaction accounts via Money Market, low-cost money transfers, and consumer financing options.

R&A Cellular founder and CEO Rui Campos called the partnership transformational, noting that combining the company’s technology and prepaid expertise with Shoprite’s immense retail scale will accelerate financial inclusion for township traders. Shoprite plans to meaningfully scale the platform by expanding R&A’s installed device base nationally while folding its own suite of financial transaction products into the catalogue. Jean Olivier, General Manager of Financial Services at Shoprite, added that the initiative provides a practical mechanism to deepen customer engagement and expand essential transaction access.
