Apple has updated its compact desktop lineup, introducing a new generation of Apple silicon for both the Mac mini and the Mac Studio. Skipping the standard M5 generation entirely, the Mac mini debuts Apple’s first 2-nanometer processor, the M6, while offering an M5 Pro upgrade option for higher workloads. Meanwhile, the Mac Studio receives a performance overhaul via the M5 Max and the flagship M5 Ultra, marking Apple’s first quad-die silicon design. However, these architectural jumps arrive alongside notable price increases across all tiers.

Having become a popular option among developers and AI hobbyists for running local models, the Mac mini’s hardware updates lean heavily into machine learning throughput. The new 2-nanometer M6 chip features a 12-core CPU configuration made up of two super cores, four performance cores, and six efficiency cores. It also houses a Dual 16-core Neural Engine, delivering 32 total Neural Engine cores, which doubles the AI processing capability of the previous M5 generation.
The graphics architecture sees a similar upgrade. The 12-core GPU incorporates dedicated neural accelerators within every core, bringing the feature to the Mac mini line for the first time. Apple claims this setup delivers up to four times faster AI processing and double the gaming performance compared to the M4 Mac mini.

For users requiring higher memory bandwidth and external expansion, Apple offers two distinct hardware configurations:
- Base M6 Model ($899): Includes a 12-core CPU, 12-core GPU, up to 32GB of unified memory with 170 GB/s bandwidth, Thunderbolt 4 ports, Wi-Fi 7, and 2.5 Gbps Ethernet. Base storage remains at 256GB.
- M5 Pro Model ($1,699): Features up to an 18-core CPU, 20-core GPU, up to 64GB of unified memory with 307 GB/s bandwidth, and rear-facing Thunderbolt 5 USB-C ports.
The refreshed Mac Studio targets heavy production and enterprise workflows, offering configurations with either the M5 Max or the newly unveiled M5 Ultra.
The M5 Ultra represents a major shift in Apple silicon manufacturing. Utilizing a 4.4 TB/s “UltraFusion” interconnect, Apple joined two M5 Max dies together to create its first quad-die processor. The fully configured M5 Ultra packs up to 36 CPU cores (12 super cores and 24 performance cores) and up to 80 GPU cores. Compared to the M3 Ultra, Apple cites several performance increases:
- CPU Throughput: Up to 25% faster single-threaded speeds and 30% faster multi-threaded performance.
- Graphics & AI Compute: Up to 40% faster graphics rendering and 4.5 times faster AI compute capacity.
Beyond core processing, the Mac Studio incorporates next-generation PCIe Gen 6 SSDs that double storage read/write speeds over the prior generation. It also includes dual Thunderbolt 5 ports and supports up to four Studio Display XDR monitors running simultaneously at 5K resolution and 120Hz refresh rates.
While the physical aluminium enclosures for both machines remain identical to prior generations, the financial barrier to entry has shifted upward. Driven by broader memory supply chain pressures, referred to as “RAMaggedon”, the base Mac mini now starts at $899. This represents a $300 increase over historical entry points while retaining a 256GB base storage drive.
The Mac Studio scales similarly, with the M5 Max configuration starting at $2,499 and the top-tier M5 Ultra beginning at $5,499. While the Mac mini remains a capable compact desktop for AI deployment, the price adjustments position both product lines as higher-tier investments for consumers and creative professionals alike.
