In a surprising pivot, OpenAI announced that it is discontinuing its high-profile video generation app, Sora. In a post on X, the company confirmed that both the consumer application and the related API service will be phased out, though a final “sunset” date has yet to be finalized.

The decision marks a significant strategic realignment for the AI lab. An OpenAI spokesperson stated that the move allows the company to reallocate its massive compute resources toward world simulation research. The goal is to advance robotics capable of solving physical, real-world tasks rather than focusing on creative video content.
“As compute demand grows, the Sora research team will focus on simulation to help people solve real-world, physical tasks,” the spokesperson noted, signalling a move away from the consumer entertainment space.
While Sora initially dominated the US App Store charts upon its debut, its popularity appears to have been short-lived. Analytics data from Appfigures revealed a steady decline in user engagement throughout early 2026. In December alone, a peak month for app usage, Sora suffered a 32% drop in new downloads compared to November.
This “fizzling out” of consumer interest coincided with OpenAI’s “code red” response to Google’s Gemini 3 Pro. Since the release of GPT-5.2, OpenAI has pivoted toward courting enterprise professionals, such as coders and data analysts, in an effort to find a more sustainable path to profitability.
The shuttering of Sora has immediate financial consequences. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney has decided to exit the partnership it signed with OpenAI late last year. Consequently, the entertainment giant will no longer proceed with its planned $1 billion investment into the AI lab, as the tool central to their collaboration is being retired.
OpenAI has promised to share more specific details regarding the timeline for the API and app shutdown at a later date.
