Local Apple retailer iStore has officially opened pre-orders for the highly anticipated MacBook Neo, with pricing that suggests a direct assault on the mid-range Windows laptop and Chromebook markets. The 256GB base model is priced at R11,999, while the 512GB version—which adds the missing Touch ID sensor—retails for R13,999.

At the current exchange rate, the US base price of $599 translates to roughly R10,900. iStore’s local entry point of R11,999 is notably competitive once import duties and VAT are factored in. This aggressive positioning creates a significant price gap within the Mac family: the Neo arrives at R7,000 less than the current entry-level M4 MacBook Air, which starts at R18,999.
The MacBook Neo utilizes a unique hardware strategy by opting for the A18 Pro chip—the same high-performance processor found in the iPhone 16 Pro—rather than the standard M-series silicon used in the Air and Pro lines. Key specifications include:
- Memory: 8GB of non-upgradeable unified memory.
- Display: 13-inch Liquid Retina panel.
- Connectivity: Two USB-C ports.
- Endurance: Up to 16 hours of claimed battery life in a durable aluminium chassis.
The MacBook Neo is positioned as one of the most disruptive moves in the laptop market in years, likely causing concern for Windows PC manufacturers. At $599 globally, the Neo significantly undercuts the higher-end MacBook models while delivering Apple’s signature build quality, the macOS ecosystem, and all-day battery life.
IDC vice president Francisco Jeronimo told Reuters that the key to the Neo’s success will be how Apple balances this lower cost while maintaining the “premium experience” typically associated with the Mac brand.
The MacBook Neo is available in four distinct finishes: Silver, Blush, Citrus, and Indigo. Pre-orders are live now at iStore, with local deliveries and in-store availability scheduled to begin on 11 March 2026.
