Key creative figures from the original The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens, will be producing the new movie, Deadline confirms. Walsh and Boyens will also be penning the screenplay. This same core team is also attached to produce a second, as-yet-untitled new Lord of the Rings movie, although a director for that project has not yet been announced, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The Hunt for Gollum was initially revealed by Warner Bros. Discovery last year, with WBD CEO David Zaslav indicating a tentative 2026 release date. (It was noted at the time that the title was a working one.) This new cinematic venture follows the release of the anime film The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim in 2024. Additionally, Amazon is currently in production on the third season of its Lord of the Rings television series, The Rings of Power.
The involvement of Serkis in a dual role, alongside the return of Jackson, Walsh, and Boyens in producing and writing capacities, signals a strong connection to the acclaimed cinematic legacy of Middle-earth. The delayed release date to late 2027 suggests a potentially ambitious production scale for The Hunt for Gollum. This news will undoubtedly be met with anticipation by fans in Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa, and across the globe, eager for new stories set within J.R.R. Tolkien’s beloved world.
