Trump announces $500 billion AI infrastructure plan

In a major announcement from the White House, President Donald Trump revealed plans to build a nationwide system of data centres for artificial intelligence, dubbed The Stargate Project. Joining Trump at the press conference were Masayoshi Son (SoftBank), Sam Altman (OpenAI), and Larry Ellison (Oracle), representing their companies as initial equity funders alongside MGX. Together, they are committing $500 billion over the next four years to establish state-of-the-art AI infrastructure in the United States.

According to a statement from OpenAI, initial tech partners for the project include Arm, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Oracle, and OpenAI itself. The buildout has already begun in Texas, with additional locations under evaluation across the country. The statement noted, “Oracle, NVIDIA, and OpenAI will closely collaborate to build and operate this computing system.”

Microsoft also announced updates to its longstanding partnership with OpenAI, confirming that their agreement will continue through 2030. Key elements such as access to OpenAI’s intellectual property, revenue-sharing arrangements, and exclusivity on OpenAI’s APIs remain intact. However, Microsoft’s exclusivity for new AI capacity is being adjusted; the company now holds a right of first refusal for any additional capacity OpenAI develops.

The announcement also included news of OpenAI’s renewed “large Azure commitment,” which will support OpenAI’s entire product suite and model training efforts, reinforcing Microsoft’s role as a central player in the AI infrastructure initiative.

During the press conference, Son and Altman directly attributed the realization of The Stargate Project to Trump’s election victory. “This transformative initiative only became possible because of your leadership and vision,” Altman remarked, emphasizing the administration’s focus on fostering AI development and innovation within the U.S.

The project represents one of the largest AI infrastructure investments ever undertaken, signalling a collaborative push by government and industry to position the United States as a global leader in artificial intelligence. With its initial phase underway, The Stargate Project marks a bold step toward reshaping AI capabilities and infrastructure on an unprecedented scale.
