The Icebreaker is a crazy expensive, aluminium keyboard

For those seeking an audacious statement piece in their keyboard collection, Serene Industries has unveiled the Icebreaker, a flagship model boasting a striking, minimalist aesthetic. This wedge-shaped keyboard is meticulously crafted from a single block of CNC-machined aluminium, exuding a raw, industrial charm reminiscent of brutalist architecture.

The Icebreaker features hot-swappable aluminium keycaps with customizable RGB backlighting. Pre-orders are available now, with prices starting at a substantial $1,500 for the wired version. A Bluetooth wireless option and a wired version with magnetic hall effect switches are also available at a premium of $1,600 – a price point comparable to a new 14-inch MacBook Pro. The keyboard base is offered in two finishes: clear and black, with the latter incurring an additional $500 cost.

This 65% layout keyboard measures 450 x 44 x 24mm and incorporates several premium features:

  • Configurable EC11 Rotary Dial: For quick access to various functions.
  • Dual Silicone Dampeners: To minimize noise and vibrations.
  • 4,000mAh Battery: Providing an estimated three months of battery life (wireless version).
  • Micro-perforations: On each keycap to enhance RGB backlighting.
  • Mounting Points: 1/4-20 inch mounting points allow for customization with accessories such as tripod mounts or monitor arms.

Serene Industries has yet to disclose the weight of the keyboard or the specific type of “full height” switches it utilizes.

Inspired by the iconic Flatiron Building in New York City, the Icebreaker embodies the philosophy of its creator, Denis Agarkov. As he stated to Null Society earlier this year, “I aimed to create a keyboard that goes against the prevailing trends, adopting a more distinctive and challenging design.”

While undoubtedly a conversation starter, the Icebreaker’s hefty price tag and uncompromising aesthetic will likely appeal to a niche audience of discerning keyboard enthusiasts and collectors.
