The first Apple foldable will be an iPad that doubles in size

Apple is reportedly aiming to release a foldable 18.8-inch iPad with a nearly invisible crease by approximately 2028, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. Prototypes developed by Apple’s industrial design group are said to resemble “two iPad Pros side-by-side.”

While rumours of a foldable iPad have circulated for years, including recent speculation about a smaller model arriving in 2026 or 2027, Gurman’s latest report echoes his 2022 description of a large, 20-inch folding “iPad/MacBook hybrid.” Although it’s not expected to run macOS fully, Gurman suggests the device will incorporate elements of both Macs and iPads, with iPadOS potentially advanced enough by 2028 to run macOS apps.

Given that Macs can now run iPhone and iPad apps, the reverse is certainly plausible. This cross-platform compatibility could also justify the device’s likely high price tag; with the 13-inch iPad Pro starting at $1,299, a foldable model twice the size would likely be significantly more expensive, but the ability to run macOS apps could make the cost more palatable.

Gurman also reiterates that a foldable iPhone is still under development, but its release is not anticipated before 2026 at the earliest, aligning with previous rumours. He notes that information from his sources corroborates a recent alleged internal Apple display roadmap, which also pointed to the 18.8-inch foldable iPad, along with plans for OLED MacBook Pros in 2026 and an OLED MacBook Air in 2027.
