Apple is developing a redesigned Magic Mouse to address long-standing user complaints, including the inconvenient charging port placement, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

In his Power On newsletter, Gurman reports that Apple’s design team has been prototyping new mouse designs in recent months, aiming to create a more “modern” device. While specific design details are scarce as the team has yet to finalize a design, Gurman confirms that the new mouse will address the charging port issue and other “longstanding complaints.” He estimates the new Magic Mouse is at least 12 to 18 months away from release.

The current Magic Mouse design, largely unchanged for 15 years despite a recent USB-C update for the M4 iMac, has drawn criticism for several reasons. Common user requests include the addition of mechanical controls, improved ergonomics to prevent hand cramping, and, most notably, a more convenient charging solution than the current bottom-mounted port, which renders the mouse unusable while charging.

Even with a relocated port, some users desire a more seamless charging experience. Many prefer wireless charging solutions, such as those offered by Logitech, where mice charge wirelessly via compatible mousepads. While some users have implemented makeshift wireless charging solutions for the current Magic Mouse, these are often inelegant and still prevent usage during charging. It is hoped that Apple’s redesign will offer a more refined solution.
