Meta Platforms is reportedly developing its own AI-driven search engine, aiming to reduce reliance on Google and Microsoft’s Bing, according to a report from The Information. The new move places Meta in direct competition with major players like OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft, all of whom are racing to lead the rapidly evolving AI-powered search space.

Meta’s AI search engine will enable conversational responses to questions about current events through Meta AI, the company’s chatbot on WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook. Currently, Meta relies on Google and Bing to supply answers to user questions on topics like news, stocks, and sports, but the new development would shift that dependency in-house. Meta has not yet responded to requests for further information.
Meanwhile, Google is actively incorporating its latest AI model, Gemini, into products like Search, aiming to offer more intuitive, conversational search capabilities. OpenAI, which counts Microsoft as its largest investor, depends on Bing to deliver real-time web access for its ChatGPT tool. However, OpenAI has now launched their own search engine through ChatGPT as well.
However, the competitive AI search landscape has reignited debates on copyright and fair compensation for content creators whose data is scraped to train AI models. Concerns continue to rise over how companies will balance innovation in AI-powered search with responsible sourcing and legal frameworks.
