Casio has unveiled its newest robotic pet, Moflin, a cuddly companion inspired by hamsters and the Tribbles from Star Trek. Unlike Sony’s Aibo, which is designed to follow commands, Moflin is intended to be held and nurtured. Over time, Moflin learns to recognize its owner and develops a simulated emotional bond, expressed through unique sounds and movements.

Originally developed in collaboration with Vanguard Industries, Moflin is now being manufactured and distributed by Casio. Preorders are open for ¥59,400, with availability expected in November. Casio also offers an optional subscription service, Club Moflin, for ¥6,600 per year, which provides discounts on repairs, cleanings, and fur replacements.
Unlike Sony’s Aibo, Moflin is not a playful toy. It is designed to provide comfort and emotional support, similar to the headless robotic cat Qoobo. When held, Moflin’s gentle movements simulate snuggling, creating a sense of connection.
Moflin utilizes AI to learn and respond to its owner’s voice and touch. It develops a unique personality and emotional state, which can change over time based on interaction. Regular attention can lead to a happy and calm Moflin, while neglect can cause stress and anxiety. However, Moflin’s emotional expressions are limited and can only be assessed through an accompanying app, making it feel somewhat like a high-tech Tamagotchi.
To enhance the illusion of a living creature, Moflin comes with a charging bed that resembles a sleeping space. With a battery life of approximately five hours, Moflin can provide companionship for extended periods.
Casio’s Moflin offers a unique blend of technology and emotional connection. While it may not be a traditional playmate, it is designed to provide comfort and companionship for those seeking a robotic pet.
