Tesla surprised at the “We, Robot” event by unveiling an unexpected addition to the company’s lineup—a futuristic passenger van called the Tesla Robovan. Unlike traditional vans, the Robovan features a striking Art Deco-inspired design with a sleek, train-like appearance and no visible wheels. According to Musk, the vehicle is capable of transporting up to 20 passengers or hauling goods, offering a versatile solution for both people and cargo transport.

“The Robovan is what’s going to address high-density transportation needs,” Musk said during the reveal. “Whether you’re taking a sports team somewhere or looking to reduce travel costs to as low as 5 to 10 cents per mile, the Robovan is the answer.”
The Robovan is being designed for Tesla’s upcoming autonomous ride-hailing service, the Tesla Network. This network will consist of purpose-built self-driving vehicles as well as personally owned Teslas that can be deployed for ride-sharing when not in use by their owners.
Tesla had hinted at a van before. In its “Master Plan Part Deux,” the company mentioned developing “high passenger-density urban transport” and suggested the possibility of autonomous buses. Earlier this year, Musk teased a van-shaped vehicle during Tesla’s annual shareholder meeting, but few expected the formal reveal of the Robovan.
Given Musk’s well-documented scepticism toward traditional public transportation, his commitment to a high-capacity vehicle like the Robovan comes as a surprise. However, in Tesla’s “Master Plan Part 3,” the company listed “bus” and “commercial/passenger vans” as key vehicles yet to be developed, signalling its growing interest in this segment.
The electric van market has recently become more competitive, with the launch of the Volkswagen ID Buzz and Mercedes eSprinter. In the commercial sector, other contenders include the Ram ProMaster EV, Ford E-Transit, and BrightDrop Zevo. Tesla’s Robovan aims to enter this space, bringing its advanced technology and autonomous driving capabilities to the forefront of high-density transportation solutions.
