Voice and video calls on Discord get end-to-end encryption

Discord, the popular communication platform that has grown exponentially since its launch in 2015, is taking a significant step towards bolstering user privacy. The company has announced the rollout of new end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for both audio and video calls. This enhanced security feature will be applied to calls from direct messages, group direct messages, voice channels, and Go Live streams.

Discord outlined the technical details and goals of its E2EE implementation in a blog post. The new upgrade is already supported on desktop and mobile clients, with the remaining clients expected to receive the feature in the coming year.

The company has prioritized transparency regarding its E2EE protocols, making extensive information publicly available. Discord also assures users that the addition of E2EE will not compromise call quality. However, there will be one notable exception: messages will not be encrypted to ensure compliance with the company’s content moderation policies.

End-to-end encryption has become increasingly prevalent in recent years, with platforms like Signal, WhatsApp, and Zoom offering it as either an option or a default feature. Discord’s adoption of E2EE aligns with the growing demand for robust privacy measures in online communication.
