While o1 excels at coding and solving multi-step problems, it comes with a higher cost and slower processing speed compared to its predecessor, GPT-4. OpenAI emphasizes the experimental nature of o1, offering it as a preview to select users.
ChatGPT Plus and Team subscribers can access both o1-preview and o1-mini starting today, while Enterprise and Edu users will gain access early next week. OpenAI plans to extend o1-mini access to all free ChatGPT users in the future. However, developer access to o1-preview is currently priced at a premium, with costs significantly exceeding those of GPT-4.
The training behind o1 is a departure from previous GPT models. OpenAI employed a novel optimization algorithm and a tailored training dataset to enhance the model’s problem-solving capabilities. By utilizing reinforcement learning and a “chain of thought” approach, o1 is able to process queries in a manner similar to human reasoning.
This new training methodology has resulted in improved accuracy, with o1 demonstrating reduced hallucinations compared to its predecessors. However, OpenAI acknowledges that hallucinations remain a challenge to completely eliminate.
o1’s standout feature is its exceptional ability to tackle complex problems, such as coding and math, while also providing clear explanations for its reasoning. In rigorous testing, o1 outperformed human experts in various domains, including mathematics, programming, and scientific disciplines.
While o1 surpasses GPT-4 in certain areas, it also exhibits limitations. Its factual knowledge and ability to process external information are less advanced. Despite these shortcomings, OpenAI believes that o1 represents a new era in AI capabilities. The model’s name, o1, signifies a fresh start and a commitment to developing more intuitive and informative AI models.
