Apple’s upcoming F1 movie, met with initial scepticism as a potential brand-building exercise, has taken a surprising turn. The involvement of Formula One’s governing body, teams, and stars like Lewis Hamilton (who co-produced) hinted at a two-hour commercial. However, the recently released teaser trailer throws a wrench into that theory – it actually looks good.

The trailer centres on Brad Pitt’s character, Sonny Hayes, a retired driver lured back to mentor the hotshot rookie, Joshua Pierce, played by Damson Idris. The final sequence, a visceral mix of roaring engines, heavy breathing, and cars blurring around the track, practically begs for the IMAX experience.
But is this a case of “too good to be true”? Can a classic underdog sports movie narrative translate to the high-stakes, high-dollar world of Formula One? Unlike other sports, even the smallest F1 teams boast multi-million dollar budgets and millionaire drivers. Gone are the days of quirky garage engineering; years-long homologation processes ensure limited room for revolutionary car designs.
So, while the teaser ignites excitement, a healthy dose of scepticism remains. Can F1 avoid the pitfalls of commercialism and deliver a compelling underdog story in a sport where underdogs are a rarity? Only time will tell, but for now, the future looks surprisingly promising.
