At CES 2024, Samsung unveiled the world’s first transparent MicroLED display at its annual First Look event. While details on pricing and retail availability remain undisclosed, Samsung showcased the transparent MicroLED alongside transparent OLED and transparent LCD models for a comprehensive comparison. The MicroLED display outshone the others in brightness, featured a frameless design, and boasted a more transparent glass panel, enhancing visibility of objects behind it.

The live demonstration of Samsung’s transparent Micro OLED displays created a unique, almost holographic effect, with content appearing to float in mid-air. The freestanding demo unit, measuring about a centimeter thick, contributed to the illusion of a floating screen. The high pixel density of micro LEDs also ensured incredibly sharp images.
According to a Samsung spokesperson, transparent MicroLED displays, due to their superior brightness compared to transparent OLED panels, are less affected by ambient light.
However, the drawback lies in the current pricing of Samsung’s non-transparent MicroLED TVs, with a 110-inch model costing $150,000. Affordability for these new displays is likely to be a distant prospect.
Interestingly, Samsung’s rival, LG, also showcased a large transparent display at CES 2024. LG’s OLED T, set to be available this year, is touted as the first wireless transparent OLED TV, featuring 4K resolution and LG’s wireless transmission technology for audio and video. This builds upon LG’s previous M3 model, introduced at the previous year’s CES, and includes a contrast screen that rolls down into a base box, offering adjustable height with a button press.
