Android receives Copilot AI assistant from Microsoft

Microsoft’s Copilot, an AI chatbot capable of diverse tasks like aiding in coding and drafting emails, has now extended its reach to Android mobile devices. Empowered by OpenAI’s latest models, GPT-4 and DALL-E 3, Copilot now boasts the ability to generate images based on simple text descriptions. The app is readily available on the Google Play Store, free for download, and notably, it doesn’t mandate a Microsoft account for signing in.

The expansion of Copilot onto mobile platforms, particularly on Android, occurred with a modest launch – a contrast to the more prominent release of Bing Chat on mobile devices. Neowin first spotted the Copilot app on the Play Store earlier this month, and although it is currently accessible on Android, there is no equivalent availability on iOS, with Microsoft yet to provide a specific release date for Apple’s platform.

This strategic move to make Copilot available on mobile devices aligns with Microsoft’s earlier approach, as witnessed when it was integrated into Windows 10 after being introduced on Edge, Microsoft 365 products, and Windows 11. This integration effectively expanded Copilot’s reach to an additional 1 billion eligible devices, emphasizing Microsoft’s commitment to widespread adoption. Notably, this expansion aligns with recent updates to Copilot, introducing features such as video summarization and song creation capabilities.
