The Last of Us is making history as the first live-action video game adaptation for film or TV to make a significant impact at a major awards ceremony. Last year, the Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program was won by the League of Legends series Arcane. The Last of Us is now in the running for Outstanding Drama Series, competing against Andor, Better Call Saul, House of the Dragon, Succession, The White Lotus, and Yellowjackets.
Lead actors Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsay have received nominations for their roles in The Last of Us, alongside several guest stars including Melanie Lynskey, Storm Reid, Anna Torv, Murray Bartlett, Lamar Johnson, Nick Offerman, and Keivonn Montreal Woodard. The show’s co-creator Craig Mazin and director Peter Hoar have also been recognized for their work on the stellar third episode, “Long, Long Time.”
In the Outstanding Comedy Series category, last year’s winner Ted Lasso faces competition from Abbott Elementary, Barry, The Bear, Jury Duty, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Only Murders In The Building, and Wednesday. The Star Wars universe has also earned recognition, with Andor receiving eight nominations, The Mandalorian receiving nine, and Obi-Wan Kenobi snagging five, including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series.
With the impressive number of nominations received by Succession, The Last of Us, and The White Lotus, it’s no surprise that HBO leads the pack this year with a total of 127 nominations. Netflix follows closely behind with 103 nominations, making it the streaming-only network with the most nods. Apple has secured 52 nominations, Amazon has 46 across Prime Video and Freevee, Hulu has 42 (or 64 if including FX shows), Disney+ has 40, Peacock has eight, and Paramount+ has seven. In contrast, the combined broadcast networks received a total of 86 nominations.
While the Emmy Awards ceremony is scheduled for September 18th, there are reports suggesting a potential delay until November or even January due to the ongoing WGA writers’ strike and potential actions by the actors’ union.
