Android 14 will use AI to enhance customisability

Google’s upcoming Android 14 release promises an array of exciting customization features for its mobile operating system. During the company’s I/O developer conference on Wednesday, Android’s VP of Engineering, David Burke, unveiled a selection of new tools that will allow users to personalize their devices like never before.

Building upon the Material You design system introduced by Google in 2021, the new customization features focus on creating custom wallpapers. Users will have the option to craft a unique wallpaper by selecting their favourite emojis. One of the tools enables users to incorporate up to 14 emojis into a single wallpaper, which can then be further enhanced by choosing a pattern and colour scheme. Once applied to the home screen, the emojis will react to user interaction, adding a playful element to the device’s interface.

For a more sentimental touch, Android 14 will introduce the “Cinematic” wallpapers feature. This innovative functionality employs on-device neural networks to animate cherished photographs. When the selected photo becomes the device’s wallpaper, tilting the device will bring the image to life, granting it a greater sense of depth. This feature will be available on Pixel devices starting next month.

Later in the year, Android 14 will introduce an integrated AI image generator within the customization menu. This tool will allow users to create exclusive wallpapers that cannot be found online. The AI image generator will provide pre-populated prompts that users can customize, simplifying the process of guiding the AI. After applying an AI-generated wallpaper to the home screen, Android’s Material You system will automatically adjust the colour palette of all user interface elements, including app icons, to ensure a cohesive and visually pleasing experience.

In addition to these advancements, Android 14 will introduce new clocks and shortcuts that can be added to the lock screen, enhancing accessibility and convenience for users. Furthermore, for those who prefer a more subdued aesthetic, Google plans to introduce a monochromatic theme.
