iPhones will finally get always-on displays with iOS 16

WWDC 2022 is only a couple of days away, and we are expecting some big announcements when it comes to Apple software. We’re expecting a lot of new features on iOS 16, including enhancements to the lock screen which will finally include an always-on display. The new version of the software will also bring wallpapers with widget-like capabilities.

According to Bloomberg, this new feature will only be available on the new iPhone 14 Pro models coming later this year. The functionality would allow those devices to show you notifications and other easily accessible information without the need to fully wake their displays. It has been a long sought-after feature from iPhone users that has been available on Android for many years.

Mark Gurman, famed Apple leaker and reporter, says iOS 16 will also include enhancements to how the operating system handles multitasking and windowing. The Messages app is expected to feature “more social network functionality” with a focus on audio messages, but what that specifically means is unknown.

Apple plans to introduce an updated version of the Health app that will expand sleep tracking functionality and medicine management. Apple is developing a medicine management tool that will let users scan their pill bottles into the app, but the initial version of the feature is unlikely to include all of the planned functionality. The Health app is also set to gain new women’s health features.

iOS 16 will bring “significant” improvements to notifications, though there are no details at this time on just what that means. Rumours indicate the iPhone 14 models are going to get a new car crash detection feature that will allow the iPhones to detect when a collision has occurred and dial emergency services automatically. This would likely have software-side support that’s probably going to be added in iOS 16, should Apple decide to move ahead with the feature.
