Apple refines flagship lineup with iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max

While Apple’s entry into foldables captured major headlines, the company simultaneously updated its core flagship series with the announcement of the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Retaining the refined titanium design language of recent generations, the new models introduce an updated deep burgundy colourway, improved thermal management via an upgraded vapor chamber, and a reduced footprint for the front-facing Dynamic Island cutout, which now supports up to three simultaneous Live Activities.

The primary optical innovation in the iPhone 18 Pro series centres on a hardware-level variable aperture integrated into the primary 48-megapixel Fusion main camera. Operating down to an f/1.8 setting, the adjustable physical iris allows photographers and cinematographers to manually control depth of field and light throughput. This produces natural optical bokeh and significantly enhances low-light capturing capabilities for high-frame-rate video and nocturnal photography.

To address growing concerns around content authenticity and image manipulation, Apple has introduced a system called Reference Image mode. The feature applies a cryptographic digital signature to captured assets, creating an unalterable digital negative stored within the Photos app. This allows creators and publishers to visually compare edited output against the pristine original file to verify whether post-processing modifications have taken place.

Underneath the glass, the flagship devices are driven by the new A20 Pro system-on-chip, engineered to deliver up to 40 percent greater sustained performance over the iPhone 17 Pro and double the sustained output of the iPhone 16 Pro. Power efficiency gains combined with larger internal battery configurations yield the longest operational battery life in iPhone history, rated at up to 36 hours for the iPhone 18 Pro and up to 45 hours for the iPhone 18 Pro Max.

Positioned as high-performance tools for creative professionals and power users preferring a traditional slab form factor over folding displays, the iPhone 18 Pro series commands a premium reflecting broader semiconductor component costs. Preorders for both models begin on Saturday, September 12, with the iPhone 18 Pro starting at $1,199 and the iPhone 18 Pro Max starting at $1,299.
