After shutting down third-party PlayStation 5 covers, most notably from dbrand, Sony has launched its own official PlayStation 5 covers. There are five different colour options available and will start shipping in early 2022. It will also launch DualSense controllers with the same colour options a little bit later in 2022. It is a galaxy-inspired theme throughout, and finally brings exciting colours to the console which was only available in white until now.

The console covers and matching controllers will be available in Midnight Black, Cosmic Red, Nova Pink, Starlight Blue and Galactic Purple. The Midnight Black and Cosmic Red PS5 console covers will be available starting in January 2022 in specific regions, including the USA, Canada, UK, France, Australia and China. The other three colours will launch in the same markets sometime during the first half of the year.
“Simply remove your original white PS5 console covers and click your new ones into place,” Sony said. “The PS5 console covers will be available for both the PS5 with the Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive and the PS5 Digital Edition.”
The new colour plates are only available directly from Sony’s website (for now), and costs $55 per set. The accompanying DualSense controllers will cost $75.
Many questioned Sony’s motivation in stopping other from selling these console covers, which were clearly built to be easily removed and replaced. At the time Sony didn’t have a patent for these covers, which is why dbrand took advantage of the opportunity. However, the Japanese electronics giant has since been granted a patent for their console cover designs. dbrand has had to change their design as a result, and simply added an additional air vent to circumvent the patent. They have called it DarkPlates 2.0, with the accompanying slogan ‘Checkmate, Lawyers.’
