First version of the Cybertruck will have four electric motors

Tesla is expected to start rolling the Cybertruck off the production line in 2022, nearly three years after it was originally revealed to the public. According to CEO Elon Musk, the debut model of the Cybertruck will offer “independent, ultra-fast response torque control of each wheel.” Other large electric SUVs and bakkies, like the Rivian R1T, also has this configuration of power delivery.

The Cybertruck will also launch with rear wheel steering as standard, which will allow it to drive diagonally, or ‘crab walk’, much like the Hummer electric SUV. Interestingly, Tesla removed all Cybertruck specs and pricing from its website in October. Presumably this means these specs have changed since its original launch, since it has been delayed several times.

The four motor version will be the most expensive variant, with a two motor version launching soon after production starts next year. However, we still don’t have concrete dates as to when this will be.

When Elon Musk first teased the idea of a fully electric ‘cyberpunk’ pickup truck no one might have anticipated the direction the maverick CEO wanted to take; but Tesla unveiled the Cybertruck with a decidedly dystopian design.

The four motor version is an obvious deviation from the originally announced Cybertrucks:

  • A single motor rear-wheel drive with 250 miles of range, 7,500-pound towing capacity, and 0-60 mph capabilities in under 6.5 seconds, for $39,900.
  • A dual motor all-wheel drive with 300 miles of range, 10,000-pound towing capacity, and 0-60 mph in under 4.5 seconds for $49,900.
  • A triple motor all-wheel drive with 500 miles of range, 14,000-pound towing capacity, and 0-60 mph in under 2.9 seconds for $69,900.
