The iPhone 13 hasn’t even hit stores on our shores yet, but we already have some fascinating leaks about next year’s iPhone 14. According to reports, Apple will shake things up significantly in 2022 with a ‘complete redesign’ of the iPhone 14. It will be the first new design since we got the iPhone X back in 2017.

This news comes from Mark Gurman, a renowned (and accurate) tech journalist with contacts in the right places. We saw a very minimal update on the newly announced iPhone 13, with hints that there is much more to come. Gurman wasn’t able to detail all the upcoming changes but seemed to agree with some previous rumours that made the rounds.
Most notably, frequently accurate analyst Ming-Chi Kuo recently claimed Apple would begin dropping the display notch entirely in 2022, starting with an iPhone 14 Pro. It would then use a holepunch selfie camera akin to those found on most Android flagships nowadays.
The new model will reportedly resemble a larger iPhone 4 in design – one of our favourite phone designs in history – with a titanium band as the outer ring, and a thicker chassis (so no camera bump).
The iPhone 14 range may also drop the Mini iPhone, as it hasn’t been selling as well as Apple would’ve hoped. There are also rumours of the return of Touch ID – not in the form of a home button, but fitting under the display (again, like modern Android flagships). We aren’t sure if it will be ready for 2022, however, and may only appear the year thereafter.
While most of the design choices for new devices are generally made more than a year in advance, there is still a significant change that these design changes might not be made for next year. However, Apple knows that customers are starting to find the current design a bit stale and they need to shake things up.
