VW’s ID Buzz promises automated ride-hailing, deliveries

We might be more familiar with the sight of the VW Crafter on our roads, through the German automotive giant has a broader scope in mind for its all-electric ID Buzz. Under the banner of the concept, which sees the firm’s classic microbus design married with an electric motor, the company intends to spearhead its move into autonomous ride-hailing and deliveries.

VW has confirmed that the vehicle will be a platform for a full-scale move into commercial ride-hailing and delivery options commencing in Germany from 2025, where it intends to deploy vehicles such as the ID Buzz on urban streets in a move that could replace human drivers altogether.

The ID Buzz leverages software produced by Argo AI – a company that is jointly backed by VW and Ford in a bid to co-create autonomous electric vehicles. The ID Buzz represents the first time Argo AI’s hardware and software have found a common cause on the same vehicle.

VW outlined that it intends to deploy a fleet of ID Buzz busses throughout Munich for testing purposes, in addition to running tests at a private track.
