The iPhone 12 mini is a sales disaster

Apple launched four iPhone 12 flagship devices in 2020 for the first time. It hoped covering all the bases will lead to increased sales throughout the range. However, the iPhone 12 mini has been a disaster for the company, as its consumers demand larger devices.

That doesn’t mean the iPhone 12 mini isn’t a good device – it has received critical acclaim, with some reviewers even calling it the pick of the bunch in the iPhone range due to the lower price. However, it turns out Apple misunderstood their customers’ needs.

According to Counterpoint, an industry data provider, the iPhone 12 mini only accounted for 5 percent of total sales of the flagship range. This comes amid an increase in the continued trend of consumers digesting more video content on the go as well as replacing traditional media consumption on TVs. Naturally, a lot of time spent on devices also go into platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Tiktok and Snapchat.

As a result of muted sales, Apple has started to divert manufacturing efforts on the mini towards more iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Max models.

In January Apple reported its quarterly earnings for the first time since the launch of the ‌iPhone 12‌ in October. While Apple did not disclose specific sales figures for each of the models in the lineup (as per usual), the company reported $65.6 billion in revenue for its ‌iPhone‌ business alone, a new quarterly record.

Analysts believe that the demand for the device would’ve been higher had it been more affordable. Interestingly, Samsung released the Galaxy S21 flagship it the same price as the iPhone 12 mini, but it still has a large 6.2-inch display.
